Sequel to Who We Are

Tyson Thompson graduated high school at sixteen and left the town of Seafare, Oregon, bound for what he assumed would be bigger and better things. He soon found out the real world has teeth, and he returns to the coast with four years of failure, addiction, and a diagnosis of panic disorder trailing behind him. His brother, Bear, and his brother's husband, Otter, believe coming home is exactly what Tyson needs to find himself again. Surrounded by family in the Green Monstrosity, Tyson attempts to put the pieces of his broken life back together.

But shortly after he arrives home, Tyson comes face to face with inevitability in the form of his childhood friend and first love, Dominic Miller, who he hasn't seen since the day he left Seafare. As their paths cross, old wounds reopen, new secrets are revealed, and Tyson discovers there is more to his own story than he was told all those years ago.

In a sea of familiar faces, new friends, and the memories of a mother's devastating choice, Tyson will learn that in order to have any hope for a future, he must fight the ghosts of his past.

My Review:
This story was different just because this story is told from Ty, the Kid's, point of view. Not that that's a bad thing. It totally wasn't. I actually liked the change.

So, this story is about Ty. We've known him since his mother abandoned him when he was six years old, although the majority of Ty and Bear's story before this book takes place when he's nine. So, to see him as an adult (he's 19 in this book) was a change...again, not a bad thing.

The thing is, Ty has always been brilliant and headed for a great future. But what his mother put him and Bear through has had it's effects...and all those come out in his story. It's not an easy story, especially after having watched him grow up. In this story, Ty is lost and it's heartbreaking to watch especially at first. Of course, his entire 'family' is still trying to support him, but much like his big brother, Bear, Ty has a really hard time letting others in to help.

But in the midst of all the trauma and drama there were still so many laugh out loud moments. So many of them happened because of Ty realizing just how much like Bear he is...much to his chagrin.

And can I just say...having read the At First Sight series, seeing Sandy and Corey/Kori and that entire crew in this series made me so completely happy. I love it when authors do that...it's like a little gift in a book!

I loved this story so, so much. Ty's romance is incredible. I loved that Dom made him work for it. These two most definitely don't have any easy go of it despite being inseparable as kids. They have to go through some growing pains first, but the wait for them to get their act together was so worth it. I LOVE THEM...and omg, Ben and Stacey's addition in this story...just perfection!!

7000+ locations and well worth the $6.99 I paid. TJ is one of the best writers in this genre that I've read (and I've read a lot!) and 99% of his books are an automatic buy for me and this one was no exception.

This is book 3 in the Bear, Otter, and the Kid Chronicles and while you could conceivably read this as a stand alone since this book is from Ty's (the Kid) POV and is about him and Dom for the most part, I highly recommend you read the first 2 books and then this one. I love this series and I love TJ's writing style. His books are serious and hilarious at the same time. The song, "All of Me" by John Legend is a perfect theme song for the characters in this series.

The Art of Breathing basically starts off where the epilogue of Who We Are left off, which is 6 years after the events prior to the epilogue. The story line is set up and then segues into 4 years later, where the rest of the plot continues from there. A couple of twists I wasn't expecting and one I was hoping for, but I don't want to spoil anything, so that's all I'm going to say.

One thing I will say is there are character crossovers from TJ's book, Tell Me It's Real. Paul, Vince, Sandy, Darren, & even Daddy Charlie made brief cameos. It was fun seeing those characters again and getting Ty's reaction to the dynamic duo of Paul & Vince. However, now I really need a sequel about Helena Handbasket and the Homo Jock King. "Thou doth protest too much" stories are my favorite. Also, thanks for dangling the proverbial carrot in front of my nose TJ because now I MUST witness the INEVITABLE meeting of Bear & Paul. Anyway...

We also get to meet a few new characters. One is Corey/Kori, who is Tyson's new BFF and is Bigendered.

The epilogue is epic for two completely different reasons, but it's the epilogue and if you've read the other books, then you know Bear's Gonna Freak. Cliffhanger? Hell Yes! ... But it was the Author's Note that made me tear up a bit because TJ said there will be one more book for Bear, Otter, and the Kid and while I am beyond excited to see how certain events change their lives, I am also sad because I don't want it to ever end. I am invested in these characters' lives and nobody likes goodbyes.

So, I highly recommend this if you enjoyed the first two or another of TJ's books. If you haven't read the first two, you really should because they're great and then come back and read this one.

The next book should be called "Life is Twice as Nice, but Difficult Too" ;)
Wow, where to start? First, let me say that I am a college level English teacher, so when I read a book, I sort of naturally pay attention to words and language; things like structure, syntax, context, yes, but content; all those things that Mr. Klune knows whereof I speak and perhaps too many readers do not consider.

Besides being a reader, as a teacher, and a writer (occasionally), I am also an accredited editor; so being the first time I've read a book from --or Dreamspinner Press, for that matter--that did not have a single spelling and/or typo in it; in a 451 page book, that is a feat!

A word of caution to those of you whom are expecting a lot of hot sex; "splattering releases", "furry hair sprinkled", or "tongue licking pink hole", you won't find that in this book; thank you. As a gay male, I appreciate that a male author understands that just a little bit of physicality goes a long way, and for giving us enough credit to know what parts are which and what they are for. ;-)

This story is witty; in fact, it can be hilarious with the dialogue and characters. I found myself laughing at some of the characters' exchanges between and with each other. The author has a terrific way of using one or two word answers/questions in a rapid fire dialogue that says so much, with so little.

The characters? They are like a version of a gay comedy sketch that is so over-the-top *weird* but so well depicted that you can not stop laughing--or crying. Some of the dialogue is heart-breaking, yes; even scary in the settings that they take place in but in the end, you will ultimately be more than happy that you know of them. What they all mean to each other is precious.

Another cool context thing that the author uses is that instead of the standard "Chapter __" headings, the different parts of the story are divided into events, with titles that sort of *warn* you about what's coming next. Mr.Klune is masterful in setting the sequences of events. In other words, it is a page-turner (or swiper, I guess, since mine is an ebook).

Finally, perhaps at one point, I thought maybe too much of this, but as I got further into the story, I found it fascinating. The author uses both 1st and 3rd person for "the Kid" main character; sometimes he is thinking aloud or speaking to you, the reader, describing a thought or feeling; asking YOU a question. It's a great literary device and keeps you on your toes.

Now that I have read this 3rd in a series, I will (have started, actually) go to the beginning, Book One.

I could go on for a long time here--it is a 451 page book, after all--but at $5.79, or roughly @1¢ per page--you will be thrilled with your purchase.

Thank you, TJ Klune.
